I think you have a wrong API key... Your API key should be this: https://www.googleapis.com/language/translate/v2?key=HERE-IS-YOUR-KEY&q=flowers&source=en&target=fr&callback=handleResponse

That is the key I'm using ... define('API_KEY', 'thisisthekeyMlPSS96zDtkDJUpw2cSPUllFXv3T0&q=flowers&source=en&target=fr&callback=handleResponse');

Remove config.php file, upload it again from the product package and put the correct API key one more time. Probably you have done something wrong inside config.php file.

It loads the translated page very slow. Do I need to removed unwanted languages from site map, or just turn off in the joomla admin to speed things up?

You can remove unwanted languages and it will make the translation process of other languages faster. But it doesn't affect your page load speed. It can be slow for now, since it is caching translations, but after it will become faster. Make sure that the cache/XX folders are writable and it is able to cache the translations. You should already have some files there.

Cache/xx folder are writable for "owner" only. Should I make them writable for Group and Public? Also .. when you go to link - the pages are not fully translating, only parts of them. ie: http://hairmax.com/de http://www.hairmax.com/es also only home page is translated, when you click on other page, it's in English.

If you can see files inside that folders, no need to change anything. I can see http://hairmax.com/de/ is already translated. Over time all the pages will be translated. There is a daily limit for API key usage, and if you exceed your daily limit the translations will continue the next day, and meanwhile it will show the original language. You can check your API key usage on https://code.google.com/apis/console/
