Changing suffix of language - can it be done?

I want to change the two letter suffix attached to the french language. The plugin normally uses /fr for french language, but can I change it to /f or perhaps /fre ?
I have made an adjustment in the "mod_gtranslate.xml" file (joomla installation), but it doesn't seem to take effect. Is there something else?

What is the reason you want to do that. It is possible, but difficult, may be I can suggest something better if you describe your situation.
