How do Neural Machine Translation systems compare to Google

Are the recent Neural Machine Translation systems competitive with Google Translate or not at all? Looking at recent papers like [1], the BLEU scores reported are around ~25 on English-German, while this [2] analysis suggests that Google Translate scores around ~80 on English-German. Is there really that large a gap? Or is it a function of the data set that the state of the art is reported on?

We use Google Translate automatic translations in GTranslate, we do not have info about other automatic translation systems.
