Why is GTranslate not translating? Is there something in the back-end of Joomla which I need to switch on or off?

Installation of GTranslate went smoothly. Flags etc. appear on my website. I read the documentation carefully.
However, when I click a flag or select a country from a drop-down list, nothing happens.
Why is GTranslate not translating? Is there something in the back-end of Joomla which I need to switch on or off?
