Google Translate API - Extra cost involved

I'm following the instructions for installing GTranslate Pro for WordPress. The readme.txt file says that the config.php file must be modified to select the default language, Username and Password. But I also see instructions for using the Google Translate API key, which they charge $20 per 1M words translated. This is a bit of a shock to me. Is this necessary? Can I simply skip it and insert a Username and Password?
Thanks,

Hi,
GTranslate Pro works without API . It is an optional feature.
