With free version for Joomla 3.x, Translation method is set for "On Fly" , and Look set to Flags or Both. I have "As a Flag" set for a few languages with the rest set not to display. Regardless of the flag size or orientation settings, when the flag links are written out, they reference blank.png, rather than the png associated with the size/orientation selected: img src="/modules/mod_gtranslate/tmpl/lang/blank.png" height="16" width="16" alt="Italian"

Ah, I see, the image is blank.png but the background image for the <a> tag is set to position the image that does contain flags (16a.png) as a background image. None the less, the images are not visible. I can see in the developer tools in chrome that the background image is set, and the image is available at the url specified.

resolved by adding display:inline-block; to css for a tags.
